The world of Battlefield is reportedly being adapted for Hollywood, as a new report indicates that EA is planning to produce a movie based on the first-person shooter franchise.
This news comes from the Hollywood Reporter, which claims that big-time studios and streaming services are meeting with EA and some A-list celebrities to purchase the rights to develop the movie. The main celebrities signed on for the Battlefield movie are reportedly Christopher McQuarrie and Michael B. Jordan.
McQuarrie, the long-time director of the Mission Impossible franchise, is said to be directing and writing the adaptation of Battlefield for the big screen, while Michael B. Jordan, who just won an Oscar for his leading role in the movie Sinners, is apparently producing and possibly starring in the film. It’s said that Jordan could star in the movie “depending on several factors.”
According to the report, studios such as Apple and Sony have already met with McQuarrie, Jordan, and the other potential producers. However, it appears that certain streaming services, like Netflix, won’t have a meeting scheduled, as the producers are eyeing a full theatrical release for the film rather than a straight-to-small-screens launch.
There’s currently no timeline for when bids from studios will start to come in or when the Battlefield movie team will make a decision on which studio to sign with. The Hollywood Reporter states that the talent for the film will be expensive, but securing the rights for the Battlefield franchise from EA will be even more expensive.
The news of a possible Battlefield movie follows on the heels of a report from earlier in the week surrounding the development of the Call of Duty movie. Activision, the publisher of the best-selling first-person shooter franchise, announced that the movie is targeting a summer 2028 release date. It appears as though this military film is significantly farther along than the Battlefield movie, as director Pete Berg and writer Taylor Sheridan have both been confirmed to be signed on to adapt Call of Duty for Hollywood, which is in development at Paramount Studios.
However, this does look like another opportunity for Call of Duty and Battlefield to go head-to-head on a different stage. For the past two decades, the two behemoth video game franchises have been competing for sales, recognition, and player count, with Call of Duty often coming out ahead. In 2025, though, Battlefield 6, the latest game in that franchise, was the top-selling game of the year, beating out Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. This was the first time a Battlefield game ever outsold a new Call of Duty title in overall yearly sales.
While the new Battlefield movie might not be released at the same time as the in-the-works Call of Duty movie, the two franchises are set up to compete with one another yet again.
