You better get your Switch 2 now if you want to avoid price hikes

The Nintendo Switch 2’s price is increasing across the US, Japan, Canada, and Europe “in light of changes in market conditions, and after considering the global business outlook,” Nintendo announced today.

Earlier this week, Bloomberg reported that Nintendo was facing pressure from shareholders to increase the Switch 2’s price as the company was selling it at a loss. Following suit with both the PS5 and Xbox consoles, Nintendo will now sell the handheld console hybrid at a higher price about a year into its lifespan.

The price changes in each region are as follows:

Region Old price New price
Japan ¥49,980 ¥59,980
United States $449.99 $499.99
Canada $629.99 $679.99
Europe €469.99 €499.99

The change will take effect in Japan on May 25, but the good news (trying to find any silver lining I can) is that the other regions won’t have the price hike until Sept. 1, so you have a little less than four months to grab a Switch 2 if you haven’t already and want it at its current price.

Nintendo Switch Online is also increasing in price in Japan, and the rest of the world has been spared that change thus far. But would anyone be surprised by that coming elsewhere soon? Prices have been going in the wrong way for the past couple of years across gaming, and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight.

“We sincerely apologize for the impact these price revisions may have on our customers and other stakeholders, and we deeply appreciate your understanding,” Nintendo said in a statement.

The Switch 2 got off to a hot start last year, and there have been several successful titles launched since, including Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Pokémon Pokopia. But with the world in turmoil and RAM shortages creating issues across the tech world, the price increases announced today felt inevitable.

If your Discord messages are struggling to send or you’re having general problems with the app, you’re not alone.

The chat app has been suffering issues for several hours now, but Discord said on Twitter/X that it was aware of the issues and is working on it. It’s already seeing some positive signs on my end, which is sad, because the server issues made me realize how much I’m on the damn app.

Granted, I use Discord for both work and personal reasons (talking to my significant other and friends), so I’m on it a lot. But still, the feeling I just got made me shudder to think about looking at my screentime details on my iPhone. I think I’m going to be touching some significant grass this weekend.

Discord’s DownDetector page started showing an influx of error reports at around 2pm CT, and it appears the issues are API-related. But slowly and surely, the errors are subsiding and messages are starting to come through again.

Your mileage may vary, as it’s still pretty spotty for me, but worry not. You should be able to hop on a voice call with friends to play games or watch movies tonight. Or you could be like me and leave the cave for once.

This is a breaking news story. It’s being written in real time.
