Subnautica 2 Biomods tier list: Best ones to use

Tadpole Pens in Subnautica 2

Subnautica 2‘s early access has plenty of Biomods on offer to help improve our chances of survival. Each Biomod has a unique ability that can either be active or passive. In this guide, you’ll discover which are best to unlock.

Complete Subnautica 2 Biomods tier list

We can have only one Active Biomod at any given time, but the same doesn’t apply to the Passive ones. I have used three different tiers to judge each of them based on their abilities.

  • S-tier choices are pretty much the best options.
  • A-tier choices are good, but you’ll need to time their use.
  • B-tier choices aren’t my favorites. They get the job done, but they’re extremely situational.

S-tier

Name Effect Reason
Dash Dash in any direction to avoid predators or hazards This is one of the best active Biomods, and it’s free. You can use the dash to avoid enemies or cover distances quickly. The cooldown is short, adding to its usefulness.
Sonic Echo Emit a sonar pulse to highlight nearby resources Finding deep resources is not the easiest task. Hence, knowing their location is certainly beneficial.
Camouflage Become invisible to predators when not moving If you find yourself trapped, all you have to do is stay calm. However, you can still take damage if the predator accidentally hits you.
Homing Sense Detect nearby bases with electrical power Great at finding nearby bases if they have their power source active.
Dermal Garden Slowly grow nutritious algae on your skin This is a useful way to manage your hunger in desperate situations. I also don’t like to cook, which is partly why I find this Biomod to be so beneficial.

A-tier

Name Effect Reason
Electric Discharge Emit an 800-volt electric shock to deter medium and large predators This charge is enough to deter any incoming predator and send them packing. However, don’t try this with the Leviathan (I did, and the results weren’t pretty).
Chum Cloud Release a cloud of delicious bait to distract predators This is a good alternative to Electric Discharge, and it allows you to get away when being chased by a predator.
Oxygen Control Slows oxygen consumption when not moving Consuming less oxygen when you’re stationary is useful, but having a bigger Oxygen tank is better.
Bioluminiscence Glow in the dark This is beneficial if you love to explore at night and don’t want to carry the Flashlight with you.
Threat Sense Detect nearby threats with specialised hair cells There are ample times when a predator will be lurking around from a blind spot. Threat Sense also alerts you about hazardous environmental conditions.
Water Retention Gain more water from all sources with enlarged, orca-like kidneys Since your body absorbs more water from practically any source, you can pay less attention to your thirst.

B-tier

Biomod Effect Reason
Pathfinder Release a trail of pheromones you can follow to find your way While the pheromones do prevent you from getting lost, their usefulness drops as you unlock more advanced tools.
Sea Skimmer Swim faster when close to underwater surfaces or the seafloor While the enhanced speed is noticeable, you can easily replace them with tools like the Wakemaker. You’ll also travel in the Tadpole once you’ve unlocked it.
Water Secretion Slowly fills a water packet by filtering fresh water from the sea Allows you to passively regenerate water, but go for Water Retention as that’s a better choice.

The only Biomod I have yet to assess is Slow Metabolism (yet to be unlocked). The list of available options should increase during early access once the updates are dropped. I will duly update my tier list accordingly based on how the new Biomods fare compared to the existing ones.

Broken turbine in Subnautica 2

The Bioscanner is a pretty important tool in Subnautica 2, and we will need to unlock it to reach the end of the campaign in the early access. Moreover, we can also use it to scan alien lifeforms, which gives us more perks like extra Biomods.

Like most things inside the game, we will have to find the blueprint for this item before we get to use it.

Bioscanner blueprint location in Subnautica 2

To unlock the Bioscanner, we need to scan just one blueprint. However, we will have to travel all the way to the fourth Angel Comb in the Alien Ruins. From there, keep moving upwards until you come across a crashed Alterra starship wreck.

You can refer to the image above to find the entrance. You’ll need the Repair Tool to proceed since one of the key doorways will be inaccessible at first. Repair the door, and head to the next room. Take the door on your left in this room, and go to the next one.

You’ll find an Iso in this room resting on a dining table and an upgrade for your Tadpole submarine. Look carefully at the corner, and you’ll find a hole that goes through a chamber. Follow the chamber until you reach the end, and you’ll come across the Bioscanner. Use your Scanner to unlock the blueprint.

How to craft the Bioscanner in Subnautica 2

The Bioscanner is an upgrade over your Scanner, and you’ll need the Modification Station. You’ll also need the required resources to craft the Bioscanner. This item scans quicker, and it also allows you to check out certain lifeforms that aren’t detected by the ordinary scanner.

Moreover, you’ll also need the Bioscanner to scan the broken turbine before you can activate it to reach the end of the game (as of writing).
