It’s official, folks: Starfield is jumping ship, leaving Xbox-Windows exclusivity and crossing over into blue territory. Bethesda’s latest RPG, set in our little corner of the universe across numerous planets and stars, will drop on the PlayStation 5 Tuesday, April 7.
This confirms previous rumors we covered regarding Starfield‘s potential PS5 launch, which signaled that the game would release on Sony’s platform on April 7. Furthermore, Bethesda is dropping the price of the base game by a significant margin, setting it at $50 on both the PlayStation 5 and other consoles, while an upgraded edition will now cost $70 and include the game and its DLCs.
Speaking of which, Starfield is also launching a new DLC, Terran Armada, which will be a narratively driven expansion for the RPG, introducing loads of new stories to experience, quests to complete, and locations to explore. Naturally, new enemies, characters, and star systems will be added as well, significantly broadening what Starfield has to offer to players old and new.
Base-game owners can purchase the DLC separately, whereas owners of the Starfield Premium Edition will get this expansion for no additional cost.
Alongside the PlayStation 5 launch and this new DLC, Starfield is receiving a massive free update titled Free Lanes. It finally introduces one of the most-requested mechanics: manual space travel, allowing players to enter Cruise Mode and travel between planets on their own. While on their way to other planets, players will be able to experience dynamic events and spend time with their crew, potentially opening up new venues of exploration or narrative threads to be followed while on the starry road.
Via Free Lanes and its Cruise Mode, one of the biggest flaws of Starfield (its very, very empty spaces) will now be somewhat filled in with additional content that’ll certainly make interplanetary travel much more interesting.
This is only one aspect of this free update, which will bring Starfield as close to 2.0 as possible. Though its developers did not want to refer to this update and DLC as 2.0, suffice it to say that it’s the biggest content drop the game has seen since launch and one that could potentially turn the tide of opinions on the game.
Smaller patches, fixes, and changes, as well as improvements and expansions to the Trackers Alliance mechanic, are also coming as part of this update and PlayStation 5 launch, available on Xbox, PC, and PS5 as of April 7.
