Shockingly, way fewer people are buying PlayStation 5 after Sony hiked its price

To the surprise of absolutely no one, it appears folks are purchasing fewer PlayStation 5 consoles after Sony increased the price of every edition. In the final quarter of 2025, sales were down by nearly 50 percent compared to the same period last year, indicating that these new prices may not have been the best decision.

That is according to Game Developer, who cites Sony’s recent financial report recounting the last fiscal year that concluded this March 31. In the final quarter of fiscal year 2025, Sony shipped 1.5 million PlayStation 5 units, down from 2.8 million units sold in the same period of FY2024. Overall, PlayStation 5 sales are down by 2.5 million YoY, with the decline starting when Sony hiked up PS5 prices last August, while increasing them again recently.

In total, Sony sold 16 million PS5s in the last year, bringing the total to over 93 million units. This hardware generation was also described as Sony’s most profitable to date, with over $136 billion in earnings thus far. Furthermore, the next year could prove a bit challenging for the Japanese giant as AI memory shortages are going to determine its sales forecast for fiscal year 2026. It will have to secure memory at “reasonable prices,” but given the scale at which the crisis is currently impacting gaming, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see another price hike or availability issues for PlayStation 5 consoles.

Given how impactful the last price increase seems to have been, we could be looking at another decline in PS5 sales, though Sony seems confident that there shouldn’t be much difference in hardware earnings between fiscal years 2026 and 2025.

AI is very unpredictable at the moment, though, so we will have to wait and see how that will reflect on the industry.

If your Discord messages are struggling to send or you’re having general problems with the app, you’re not alone.

The chat app has been suffering issues for several hours now, but Discord said on Twitter/X that it was aware of the issues and is working on it. It’s already seeing some positive signs on my end, which is sad, because the server issues made me realize how much I’m on the damn app.

Granted, I use Discord for both work and personal reasons (talking to my significant other and friends), so I’m on it a lot. But still, the feeling I just got made me shudder to think about looking at my screentime details on my iPhone. I think I’m going to be touching some significant grass this weekend.

Discord’s DownDetector page started showing an influx of error reports at around 2pm CT, and it appears the issues are API-related. But slowly and surely, the errors are subsiding and messages are starting to come through again.

Your mileage may vary, as it’s still pretty spotty for me, but worry not. You should be able to hop on a voice call with friends to play games or watch movies tonight. Or you could be like me and leave the cave for once.

This is a breaking news story. It’s being written in real time.
