Call of Duty is back, baby! Well, one specific CoD game, that is.
A massive resurgence of players, including a new all-time peak player count on Steam, has arrived in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The 2019 reboot of the MW sub-franchise that began back in 2007’s Call of Duty 4 reached 61,667 players on Steam yesterday, higher than the current Call of Duty HQ app that includes Black Ops 7, Warzone, and more.
Why? Well, it’s six bucks on Steam right now. SIX DOLLARS. Activision is taking part in Steam’s Spring Sale, and many of its games are marked down, including several more recent CoD titles and others like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Crash Bandicoot, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and more.
But for MW 2019, its 90 percent discount makes it by far the cheapest it has ever been. It’s the cheapest game in Activision’s whole sale listing, and that’s probably by design. What better way to get players excited for the upcoming game than by lowering the point of access to another?
Rumors point to a new sequel in the Modern Warfare series coming this year after back-to-back Black Ops releases. That reveal is likely coming in the next few months, so this huge discount feels targeted to get players talking and back into the ecosystem, especially when compared to the other sale prices (the original CoD from way back in 2003 is $10 right now).
But I will say, it’s been quite funny to see the discussion about MW 2019 popping back up. It was a massively successful CoD game commercially, but it had quite a few controversial design decisions. No red dots on the mini map, no map voting, and only six six-vs-six maps on launch were just some of the issues it had.
This game also began the current CoD cycle of seasonal content drops and strict skill-based matchmaking, so players have some very varied feelings about it. But for six bucks, why not, right? That’s likely the thought process of many of these players.
I have some pretty fond memories of the game, because I basically played only Search and Destroy with three or four friends. The respawn modes and maps were not my favorite, to say the least. And so I can’t help but wonder if this big discount is a hint at what the new game, possibly called Modern Warfare 4, will play like.
