Marathon release date announced, open weekend incoming, and free cosmetics for Destiny 2 players

The Marathon x Destiny 2 collab showcases emotes and other items

Marathon, Bungie’s controversial extraction shooter, is officially releasing on March 5, the studio confirmed today. The dev team also promised an upcoming open preview weekend, though no dates are set. And if you’re a Destiny 2 player, you also get a few cosmetics for free—Marathon not required.

Though the game’s release month has been public knowledge since last December, we now know it’s releasing at the beginning of the month, rather than at the end. Today’s announcement also confirmed the price tag of $39.99—equal to meteoric extraction shooter Arc Raiders. It will be available on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Bungie has ramped up news about its newest project since the end of 2025, with the debut of a visual documentary (ViDoc) touching on the changes in the game’s vision. Last week, another video showcased Marathon‘s playable characters, the “Runner Shells.” Some provide unique gameplay opportunities, like Rook, but others seem to have elements lifted straight from Destiny 2.

If you can’t wait for March 5 or are still on the fence about trying Marathon, Bungie confirmed there will be an upcoming open weekend ahead of the game’s release, though it did not present a date. Fingers crossed it’s not the weekend of Feb. 27, when Resident Evil Requiem releases.

And while there’s a considerable amount of Destiny 2 in Marathon (such as the Destroyer Shell’s entire ability kit), Bungie is giving out free cosmetic goodies in the looter shooter to celebrate the new venture.

Starting tomorrow, Destiny 2 players can collect three new Marathon-inspired items: An ornament for MIDA Multi-Tool, a lime green shader, and an Exotic multiplayer emote. They will be available for all players as a free bundle, just like some pieces of the Mass Effect collab. That said, promotional art also showcases other yet-unseen items, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see more cosmetics for Silver in the Eververse store.

Though the official date reveal warms players up for Marathon, its plagiarism scandal with artist ANTIREAL is bound to be an indelible blemish on the studio’s record. The two resolved the dispute, but the damage to its reputation is done—in the same way that Destiny 2 might still be “the game that deleted paid content,” depending on who you ask.

Marathon‘s March 5 release date may be close to Destiny 2‘s next major update, Shadow and Order, which is bound to release around that month based on its promised content schedule.
