It seems Steam Controller is shipping first as RAM crisis holds Steam Machine back

The new Steam Controller

We’re all aware of the AI-induced RAM crisis, especially those reading my constant complaints about it. As confirmed by Valve, the Steam Machine is being held back by said supply issues, but it seems the Steam Controller won’t have to endure them alongside it, as an official distributor has put up pages for the device ahead of imminent release.

That is according to Gabe Follower, who noticed that Komodo Station, the official distributor of Valve hardware for much of East Asia, put up an official page for the Steam Controller, complete with many details and images that have since been taken down. Following the takedown, pages for the Steam Machine and the Steam Frame also seem to have been put up, but with no overt details and merely a link pointing toward Steam’s own hardware page.

Anyhow, the fact that Komodo Station published a fully detailed page for the Steam Controller likely means that we’re about to see the device launched separately, rather than together with the Steam Frame and Steam Machine. This is because the Steam Controller is probably not being affected by the global RAM crisis induced by OpenAI’s rampant reservations of undiced wafers, or if it is, it’s not significant enough to put off its release any further.

Compared to the Steam Machine and Steam Frame, both of which have actual hardware inside of them capable of running games, the Steam Controller doesn’t require significant amounts of memory, if any, allowing it to be shipped earlier than its brethren.

This would be the second iteration of the Steam Controller. The first one failed spectacularly, though it served as a valuable lesson for Valve. The new version seems a lot more refined and “traditional” in design, rather than being super elaborate and complex and different like the first one was. The one thing I feel could be a flaw is that it’s just really big, though I can’t say for sure since I didn’t try it out yet.

Either way, we’ll probably know soon, as odds are that Valve is about to launch the Steam Controller in certain markets, if not worldwide.
