Despite all the backlash it received from people following its end-of-discs announcement, Sony seems to have doubled down on that plan as it now posts a notice to users who want to buy its PS5 Disc Drives.
Whereas we saw prior reports of Sony limiting separate Disc Drives to one per order amid “high demand,” Sony is now reminding everyone willing to buy one that it will stop producing discs for any new games released after January 2028. The notice, apparently tacked onto the Disc Drive page today, is likely there to deter even more people from physical media so the company can further justify its doom.
A few days ago, Sony announced that it would be ceasing the printing of new PlayStation discs come January 2028, with games released prior to that date continuing to be reprinted if their respective publishers wish so. That means that after January 2028, PlayStation would effectively become an all-digital platform.
To say that there was a lot of backlash to the news would be putting it mildly, and even people like Hideo Kojima came out to say that it’s a “frightening” future that awaits us if we continue to push for digital media so much.
However, Sony seems undeterred, justifying its decision by saying that 85 percent of its revenue comes from digital. That doesn’t compare apples to apples, though, as the digital revenue part also includes so many indies, live services, and free-to-play online games, as well as all of their microtransactions and digital purchases, whereas physical games are mostly singleplayer, offline experiences.
Two years ago, Insider Gaming reported how disc versions of the PS5 make up over 80 percent of all PlayStations sold, despite their being $50 to $100 more expensive than the digital version. Some reports also said that, when single-player games are considered, up to 60 percent of all sales were discs, not digital.
But I guess sacrificing such a large part of your own community and the PR nightmare that ensued are worth it to improve margins by single-digit percentages, because the line, of course, must always go up.
