The Butcher has been one of Diablo‘s most infamous antagonists since early into the franchise, and now, you can finally play as the cleaver-wielding demon in Season of Slaughter. Becoming the Butcher is one of the main seasonal mechanics, and you don’t want to miss this one.
Turning into the Butcher gives you a new set of devastating skills, meant to wipe down hordes of enemies and keep your killstreaks going. As you can guess by the name, it’s all about reaping chaos, taking enemies, and stocking up on Fresh Meat. (No, really, it’s one of the seasonal currencies.)
Here’s how you can become the Butcher in Diablo 4‘s Season of Slaughter.
How to play as the Butcher in Diablo 4 Season of Slaughter
To turn into the Butcher, you must find Shrines of Slaughter, which appear in Helltide areas and are marked on your map. That’s not the only landmark to look out for in those demon-ridden zones, though. Borrowing your new form requires a Meaty Offering, which drops from Tortured Gifts (a.k.a. Helltide Chests), so put your Aberrant Cinders to good use.
Don’t forget that dying on a Helltide slashes your Aberrant Cinders by half, so it’s probably wise not to carry many around if you’re uncertain about your build.
Outside of Helltides, you can also play as the Butcher in Slaughterhouses, a short dungeon that rewards you with high-tier items and a decent amount of XP. These require Slaughterhouse Keys to open, but it’s more than worth diving into them. Yeah, the loot helps, but the carnage might be fun enough to get you yelling “FRESH MEAT!” at your monitor. I’m lucky my walls are thick.
How to play as the Butcher in PvP in Diablo 4 Season of Slaughter
If you’d like to chase other players in your best bona fide Butcher impression, though, Season of the Slaughter also brings a special recurring PvP event called Ceremony of Slaughter. When it’s active, killing enemies builds your Savagery meter. At the end of it, the “fiercest contender” can grab a Butcher’s Idol and sow carnage on their foes, according to Blizzard.
