Watching a movie after reading the book can be a strange experience, especially when a familiar character suddenly feels like a completely different person. Sometimes it’s a matter of personality, while other adaptations change a character’s age, appearance, motivations, or even their entire role in the story. These changes aren’t always bad, but they can completely reshape how audiences see a beloved character.
Here are 15 movie characters that were completely different in the book.

The Devil. Lucifer Morningstar. Beelzebub. Whatever you choose to call him, Satan himself was damn near everywhere in the ’80s and ’90s. That’s because the United States was in the thrall of what would come to be known as the “Satanic panic.”
Intimidated by frightening new technologies like audio cassette tapes that transmitted heavy metal music into young people’s ears and 8-bit home video game consoles that allowed youth to perform creatively violent fatalities on their friends, folks saw Satan lurking around every corner in the burgeoning analog era. Parents, clergy, politicians – no corner of adult society was immune to Puritan brain worms.

While the concept of a Satanic panic may seem silly to modern sensibilities, the second-order effects of it were often anything but to those who were around to experience it. One particularly destructive example of the moral panic gone haywire was that of the West Memphis Three. Now an indie horror movie inspired by that real life true crime tragedy is set to depict a terrifying reality within the Satanic panic era… and Den of Geek can exclusively premiere its first trailer. Check out the first look at Carry the Darkness below.
“These games teach a child to enjoy inflicting torture,” narrates Senator Joe Lieberman (who is one of the chief reasons the United States doesn’t have a public option for universal healthcare, by the way) as we see lead character Travis Baldwin (Joel Meyers) enjoy some harmless heavy metal music and Mortal Kombat mayhem.
As the rest of the trailer reveals, however, Travis’ small town is experiencing a string of murders and his interest and the macabre and penchant for dark attire have made him a chief suspect. The film’s official synopsis reads:
Set in 1993, Carry the Darkness follows Travis Baldwin, a misunderstood teenage metalhead living in the shadow of the Satanic Panic. When a mysterious entity begins wreaking havoc in his small town, Travis becomes the prime suspect. Hunted by suspicion while the true evil remains hidden, he must protect himself and his friends before paranoia and darkness consume them all.
Blending supernatural horror, coming-of-age drama, and small-town mystery, Carry the Darkness captures the paranoia of the Satanic Panic through the lens of a generation raised on heavy metal, The X-Files, and Twin Peaks. Atmospheric, emotionally resonant, and steeped in ’90s nostalgia, the film explores the high cost of moral panic—and the monsters it creates.
Carry the Darkness is written and directed by Douglas Forrester and stars Joel Meyers, Jaden Gant, Helen Laser, Hollis Fox, Autumn Breaud, and David Boldt. Travis Bacon composed the score. The film will receive its streaming premiere to BloodStream on Friday, August 14, 2026 and will be available for digital rent or purchase via via Amazon, Apple TV, Direct TV, Google Play, Vimeo on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. A Blu-ray release (with audio commentary and deleted scenes) will be available Tuesday, September 8, 2026. It will receive a full release through The Horror Collective starting December 1, 2026.
