How does the combo system work in Vampire Crawlers

Combatting a boss in Vampire Crawlers

There are different ways to win in Vampire Crawlers, and it’s crucial to chain your weapon cards to do more damage. Combos allow you to multiply the effect of your weapon cards and cause the highest possible damage to eliminate enemies.

There are different ways to create weapon combo chains, and this guide will break down the complete system.

Vampire Crawlers weapon combos explained

In simple words, weapon combos refer to multiplying the damage and effects of the cards you use. This usually involves amplifying the base damage of a particular weapon card by playing the items in a correct order.

To land a combo, you’ll have to play the cards in an increasing mana-cost order. Every card you play has a specific mana cost. If you refer to the image above, there are some cards without a mana cost, and some with one or two. To chain a combo, you must play the card that costs zero mana first. Then, you have to play the card that requires one mana.

While this is the basic way to create a combo in Vampire Crawlers, there are additional ways to create these chains.

How to create combos in Vampire Crawlers

The basic system is to create cards in an ascending mana cost. However, there are two additional ways to create these chains.

You’ll come across Wild Cards that don’t consume mana and allow you to continue existing combos irrespective of their cost. If you have a Wild Card, you can create a combo by bypassing the basic law of playing them in ascending mana cost.

In simple words, you can completely ignore the mana cost of the next card being played. Hence, they create unique opportunities that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.

While you can use a Wild Card just once (then, they get removed from the round), they’re extremely useful when it comes to creating overpowered chains.

Let’s say I have three cards: a Wild Card, a card with 0 mana cost, and a card with 2 mana cost.

  • Typically, there’s no way to create a combo, but the Wild Card allows you to change that.
  • You can play the 0-cost card, then play the Wild Card.
  • Then, play your card that costs 2 mana. It will still activate as if you have triggered a combo.

You’ll also come across gems at random in your run. Gems are usually obtained when you level up or when you open a chest. While they’re obtained randomly, gems will strengthen your cards and add extra effects when you play them during a fight.

If you get the Reverse Combo gem, you can combo a card with another one that costs one less mana. This allows you to multiply the effect of your weapon card that costs less (since you can play it in a non-ascending order and still create a combo).

The Easy Combo gem, on the other hand, allows you to chain two cards irrespective of their mana costs. You can completely ignore the ascending mana cost factor and yet create the combos to your liking.

Since combos help you deal significantly more damage, you should draft cards and power-ups in the same way.
